Grayson County Shelter Needs Donations 2016

Economy Taking Its Toll On Charitable Organizations

The economy is still taking its toll on everyone. But it's really hitting local homeless shelters and charity organizations the hardest. The Grayson County Shelter is in need of many items right now, and is asking for your support. The shelter always sees more people move in during the summer, when the temperatures climb and many people find it's too hot to live on the streets. But they say a struggling economy is making it even harder for those people and the shelter to get by.

The shelter is almost at capacity and nearly half of those residents are children. Director Annette Limoges says they're going through at least 14 gallons of milk a week. And as soon as they receive donations, they're gone."The economy has a big impact," said Furst. "Everybody's hurting. Donations are down, as well, because the giving public is hurting also. So donations are down and people's needs are up and so it's really put people in a big crunch, all the agencies, so we're just putting a cry out there to the public to see if they can step in, if they're able.

"If you'd like to help you can donate things to the shelter's thrift store. The money from items sold goes towards the shelter. Or you can drop off donations at the center at 331 W. Morton Street in Denison. The shelter could use the following items:
